Step
1: Volunteer Self Assessment
The
following list of questions will help you decide if the American Red Cross is
the place for you to volunteer:
1.
Often people with good intentions are just too busy to volunteer. Too often
volunteers will have great intentions, but are unable to follow through with
their commitment.
Do you have room in your life for another
commitment? yesno
2.
The American Red Cross is seeking volunteers who are responsible and reliable.
Your assignments will often vary in where they are located and the amount of
time required to complete them. Is your schedule flexible enough to
accommodate this commitment? yesno
3.
Many Red Cross opportunities require that you take classes before beginning
volunteering. This training often requires travel to different areas at your
own expense. Are you willing to take the necessary training in a timely manner?
yesno
4.
Volunteering for the Red Cross involves working with people of
different ages, sexes, socioeconomic, cultural, racial, ethnic, religious and
educational backgrounds. Are you comfortable with people who are different
from yourself? yesno
5. The Red Cross never discriminates based on
race, age, gender or social status, but we must ensure that our volunteer
workforce is free from criminal liability and protect our clients and staff from
potential danger. Are you willing to take a Red Cross
Background Check that requires the submission of your Social Security Number,
Driver's License and Birthdate? yesno
6.
Typically, the individuals who have been and continue to be successful
American Red Cross volunteers possess certain skills/characteristics.
Do you
consider yourself good at the following:
Time management? yesno
Teamwork? yesno
Communication? yesno
Taking Initiative? yesno
Follow up? yesno
Working in stressful situations?
yesno
Thank you for taking the time to complete this
assessment! If you answered yes to each of these questions, we encourage you to
proceed to Step 2. If you answered no to any of these questions, you are
probably not ready to be a Red Cross Volunteer.
